Garmin made the announcement that it will start to offer services in addition to core navigation services. These services will provide local information to consumers such as fuel prices in the area, local weather, events and local movie screenings. It currently affects the US only. The information will be delivered via a partnership between Garmin and AT&T.
The motivation behind the development is that it is assumed that consumers don’t want multiple devices each performing a subset of the overall tasks required such as Internet access, navigation, phone calls etc. Smartphones are starting to incorporate decent navigation applications so the question is whether consumers will ditch traditional navigation systems in favour of one device which could be a smartphone. This obviously poses a threat to navigation system manufacturers who are faced with the choice of offering extended features or partnering with smartphone manufacturers to put their technology into the smartphone device.
It will be interesting to see how it plays out.
