Earlier this year Nokia introduced free navigation on all of their new, GPS enabled smartphones. This was made possible via a new version of Ovi Maps that includes voice-guided turn-by-turn navigation and other advanced navigational features.
Last week, Nokia announced that 10 million customers have downloaded the free navigation app. It immediately put pressure on TomTom. Shares fell nearly 4% even though TomTom tried to play down the threat. TomTom are facing enormous competition from smartphone makers like Nokia, Apple and Google. In addition, Garmin launched the new Nuvi 3700 series which looks very smartphone like with an attractive glass and metal design and an incredibly thin and lightweight form.
